How to deal with the spam score, how do you reduce it? The question was asked by a many of my friends after finding out that I reduced the spam score from 4 to 1.

What is a Spam score? And how spam score effect our website ? In contrast to Domain authority and page authority which measure the quality of a blog.

The spam score is used by Moz (a software tool ) to measure the weakness of a blog.

If website is a natural website, that meets Google’s Community Guidelines , and provides benefits and helpful information to its users?

The spam score is used to help webmasters to monitor the possibility of being punished by the Google for making mistakes in SEO technique

  2. Large site with Few Links
  3. Site Link Diversity is Low
  4. The number of Followed to No followed Subdomains Outside of the Normal 
  5. The ratio of Followed to No followed Domains Outside of the Norm

  7. Thin Content
  8. Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small

Each site will be tested with the 17 indicators above to get a spam score, a good spam score is zero.

This indicates that the site has no indication of spamming techniques on the internet.

Moz divides the spam score area into three flags, namely 1–4 green, 5–7 yellow and 8–17 red.

If the spam score hits a red flag, it’s very likely that the site will be immediately banned/deindexed by Google.

For this blog or article, we will focus on how to manage the Moz spam score to minimum level on our blog.

Before dealing with the spam score, first we will check out our spam score to know what our spam score is?

And what indicators are affected by the spam score?

We will use MOZ to know about our spam score and when we get the exact number  , our work will become easier and more focused on the issue.

If you want to find out the spam score of your blog , you can open the MOZ , Open Search Explorer link and enter the URL of the blog or  website you want to analyze for spam score. 

Next, MOZ will give you the exact number of your spam score and the indicators of spam score as well .

How to deal with Spam score Moz

Stop here, just read the article, because what is written below is long enough to take more than 2000 words and the worst thing is, the tips for reducing spam scores written here are not very valuable.

Just look at the authority of this blog post, it’s  just 23, at most 24, it’s really not good that full of content.

So instead of being short, you’ve read long but just left it, click the X button at the top right of the browser section.

To reduce the spam score on Moz software, we will look at it each indicator accordingly.

Later there will be 17 indicators that we will peel one by one how to overcome.

What needs to be remembered, we don’t need to do all of the seventeen ways to avoid spam scores.

Simply focus all your efforts and efforts to eliminate spam scores only on the flags that appear in our blog’s Open Search Explorer report. So, here we go..

1. Low Moz Trust / Moz Rank

Moz develop Domain Authority and Page Authority, Moz can also developed Moz Trust (mT) and Moz Rank (Mr) as well.

Moz Rank represents the link popularity score. It shows the importance level of a web page on the internet.

Moz Rank, often known as Google Pagerank Wannabe, is a metric that assesses the quality of the link profile pointing to a website. A page’s Moz rank is determined by combining the number and quality of links pointing to it.

The DA value according to Mossa Hemmani Founder SEtalks is a value whose main indicator comes from the total incoming links.

Moz Trust is almost similar to Moz Rank, if Moz Rank judges based on the popularity of a web page, Moz Trust judges based on the level of trust of the web page.

Does a website get links from trusted websites? Links from university and government sites are examples of links from reputable websites.

The more incoming links from .edu and .gov sites it will have an impact on increasing Moz Trust.

Both of these parameters have a scale of 0–10, generally, a regular web blog gets a score between 2–4.

The best way to raise Moz Trust and Moz Rank is to improve inbound backlinks to our website. It is important to highlight the caliber of the newly created backlinks.

2. Large Site with Few Links

Sites that have thousands of pages, should have thousands of links too. These can be inbound or internal links of this particular website.

What is Inbound links ? Inbound links redirect traffic to our website like we can say inbound links are incoming links from other’s to ours website . Usually, inbound links are obtained by bloggers from blog walking to other blogs.

What bloggers often forget is that the Moz parameter has DA and PA, DA indicates the overall strength of the website and PA indicates the strength of an article.

The power of an article can come from on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
For on-page SEO optimization we can use focus keywords, create articles that are deep, detailed, complete, and useful for site visitors.

On the other hand, blog walking and posting links to the article on relevant websites are two methods of off-page SEO optimization.

Generally, when doing blog walking, a blogger will put his homepage URL in the name/URL column.

Actually, this results in a ton of inbound links to the homepage in terms of SEO.

Links to the homepage are booming, while there are no links at all pointing to our articles.

This greatly increases the homepage’s power when combined with article pages.


Our articles also need to get backlinks from other sites, the easiest way is by blogwalking.

However, with blog walking, we usually have difficulty allocating the appropriate anchor text. 

I frequently use the following SEO strategies to boost article backlinks:

  1. Create a short article on Linkedin, add anchor text similar to the main keyword in our article
  2. Create and upload documents that already have optimized anchor text into slideshare.net, Scribd, and academia.edu
  3. Doing guest posts on several blogs that have the good authority / or have thousands of viewers per day
  4. Creating internal links between relevant new articles and older ones
  5. The use of plugins, such as related posts, will help improve internal linking between articles that are still related.



3. Site Link Diversity is Low

I categorize site link variety into various groups.

  1. IP diversity
  2. Domain diversity
  3. Anchor diversity
  4. Landing page diversity

A shared IP address is typically shared by multiple domains that originate from the same hosting. We can search for backlinks from websites with diverse domain names to increase link diversity .

But if looking for a site based on IP is quite difficult. We can find backlinks from various domains.

The more root domains that link to our site, the better. The use of the same name in the name / URL column is actually good enough to increase our site’s branded links.

However, the name of the commenter can provide information on the website owner, who made the comment.

But if you see that our articles need backlinks too, we need to apply anchor text and landing page diversity when we embed backlinks on other sites.

Regrettably, site owners frequently view the use of particular anchor text in the comments section as spam. Thus, individuals who have comments are discarded rather than wishing to respond to us..

If this is the case, it’s useless for us to embed backlinks. I typically make an anchor text variation using the name blogger-keyword to get around this.

To make diverse backlinks lead to articles, I usually only use 3–4 backlinks with 2–3 variants of keywords for each article.

For the remainder, use the anchor text that we frequently use to identify ourselves while commenting to navigate to the homepage.

How come there are so few backlinks to the article? Well, it’s also fortunate that someone wants to receive comments with the name of the commentator who deliberately strays off the keyword.

In actuality, this sub-discussion has two spam score indicators: the ratio of followed to no-followed domains and the ratio of followed to no-followed subdomains.

4.The ratio of Followed to No followed Subdomains Outside of the Norm

These two indicators only require the usage of a single sub-discussion because the only differences between them are in the domains and subdomains. There are three types of domain names in the website naming hierarchy: root domains, top-level domains, and subdomains. A single dot (.) designates the top-level domain, whereas a dot (.) designates the root domain.

A subdomain consists of two or more dots, but a top-level domain is something like anotherorion.com. The subdomain category includes blogs hosted on WordPress.com and Blogspot. In fact, according to Google, search engines will only follow dofollow backlinks and not nofollow ones.

The problem is if all the links that point to our site are do-follow links. Google will consider the backlinks that we get are unnatural because they are considered to force Googlebot to crawl do follow links.

Google may think of them as paid links, which they forbid in Google’s call for do follow links in paid articles.

Or even worse, if Google labels it as a manipulative backlink, it can directly deindex us. Google’s bastard right? Yes surely.

Even while Google bots do not follow backlinks, they still carry additional weight when deciding search result rankings.

The more links the better, at least Moz parameters such as Domain Authority, Page Authority, MozRank also use no-follow links in their ranking algorithm.


5.The ratio of Followed to No followed Domains Outside of the Norm

What is the ratio of followed to nofollowed backlinks that point to our site? Even while Google bots do not follow backlinks, they still carry additional weight when deciding search result rankings.

Now let’s see where our average Nofollow backlinks spread from?

  1. Comments say hello, thanks for writing during blogwalking
  2. Cross-post social media
  3. RSS aggregator
  4. And where we can get the follow link?
  5. Paid links
  6. Guest Post
  7. Natural review

If we look at the proportions, can you guess which is the most followed to nofollowed ratio?

Yep, most of the backlinks are no-follow.

Blogwalking can be done easily, it takes less than five minutes to complete, crosspost and RSS aggregators can run automatically after we set them up automatically using plugins or sites like Hootsuite or Dlvr.it providers.

While you wait, keep in mind that obtaining backlinks will be challenging for the following reasons: 

1. You will need to pay for sponsored posts; 

2. You will need to write articles and send them to other bloggers to be displayed as guest posts.

3. If you’re lucky, you might be able to find blog partners who are willing to review our blog for free. AI Content Detector

4. The blog walking culture still needs to add followed links to our site.

It would be even better if we want to send guest posts to blogs that have good authority.

Because after all, backlinks from reputable websites are better than backlinks from unknown websites

To get the precise ratio, strike a balance between dofollow and nofollow; as of now, no one knows the exact value of the proportion.

6. Small Proportion of Branded Links

Whenever and wherever we hear the name Pepsodent, we will imagine a top-notch toothpaste product.

Conversely, when we hear the name Coca-cola, we will immediately remember the brand of carbonated drinks.

Never overturned or swapped. Why is that so? Because we’ve heard that brand too many times before, we can immediately recognize the quality, aroma, and taste when we hear the name.

That said, the best marketing technique is to be able to embed yourself in the minds of its users as the number one brand.

How is that related to branded links? the first time we ever comment on a website belonging to someone else.

That person wouldn’t be too interested in knowing who we are?

But if we are often involved there, then automatically people will know who we are.

The backlink that is carried in our profile when commenting is a branded link, not only for the site owner we are commenting on but also for search engines.

Search engines will immediately recognize that anchor text has a relationship with such a site if they often find us using the same anchor text.

Are branded links able to tell third parties about our identity? where are we from? what are our strengths? and what is our interest?

A low percentage of branded links indicates that our anchor text is highly diverse, which is excellent, especially for raising the page authority of our content.

But branded links, which lead to the homepage also need to be secured and continue to be added little by little with blog walking or other off-page techniques.

7. Thin Content

Creating a new post that solely comprises photographs or greetings is a dangerous mistake for a blogger.

Blogs are a medium for telling stories, not segmented social media like Instagram or Twitter.

Try, therefore, to ensure that every new post we publish is at least 300 words long, meaningful, and readable—unless, of course, our site specializes in poetry.

Good content is content that is informative and easy to read, regardless of the niche used.

Indeed, some bloggers can make articles that are quite dense containing less than 100 words.

However, if we have short articles, it should also be balanced by having several articles that are quite long.

A content that is too brief suggests that some, though not all, of the material is incomplete. When writing an article, it’s crucial to consider keyword density (or distribution) in order to increase the likelihood that it will appear in search results.

Self Host WordPress users can use the free YOAST SEO plugin to measure exact keyword requirements according to the number of words in the article.

8. Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small

MarkUp is the name of the code used in a web page. How do we see site mark-up? right-click a web page and press  view source. The view will appear .

It’s markup if you’re seeing a lot of strange language and hints. The markup language is separated into multiple languages: HTML is the most fundamental, followed by CSS for style adjustments, PHP for server-side page creation, and Javascript for dynamic content like ads.

The rest is plain text or the content of the article. The proportion of markup to plain text cannot be quantified. However, Moz tries to explain that if a page has an excessive amount of plain text that isn’t matched with markup, it might be a keyword spider page.

A page that contains thousands of keywords to trap users who are looking for certain words so that they always get that page in search engine search results.

If we have long enough content. Ways to increase the use of Markup can be by:

  1. Split the article into subheadings (heading markup)
  2. Using bold, italic, underline on certain words
  3. Insert pictures, videos, or other content
  4. Using text color

9. A Large Number of External Links

According to Google, a website’s display should have no more than 100 links.

So if in the past bloggers often made backlink pages in the form of blogrolls to exchange backlinks.

Currently, we need to be very careful in providing backlinks to the outside.
Links that point outside of our domain to other websites are known as external links. Our site is seen as spam since external links that are too big are thought to not offer links that are actually relevant.

Especially if the external link is dofollow which forces Google bots to crawl the link.

In order to lower the spam score, it’s a good idea to remove extraneous outgoing links. The more links the bot has to follow that are irrelevant to the article being read, the more irritated Google will be and deem it spam.

10. Low Number of Internal Links

Internal links are interrelated links between one page to another page on our website.

Since the homepage may be accessed immediately from any page, it has the most links of any page. With the second most links is the page found within the menu button.The rest is divided into links between articles, tag links, and category links.

Site navigation on a website should be intuitive and connected. Both from the navigation menu and inline navigation in related articles.

Our other articles that also cover SEO are typically of interest to readers who stumble onto our posts using SEO keywords. As a result, we must provide relevant articles in every post.

The use of related articles is able to reduce the bounce rate of visitors after reading our articles (also read: How to lower the bounce rate using only article tags), and lead them to navigate to other sites of our website before they depart. The page authority of our content can be enhanced by the implementation of internal linking. In my perspective, an excellent internal linking placement is

  1. A good internal linking placement in my opinion is
  2. 1–2 anchor text in related posts
  3. inline related post (wp users can use this plugin)
  4. related post at the bottom of the article

11. Anchor Text Heavy Page

Having internal links between articles on a website is great for SEO, but can backfire if there are too many internal links in one article to other articles.

Good internal links are those that have relevance to the referring article, contain the necessary anchor text, and do not embellish in every paragraph.

Usually, the articles that have the most visitors will start adding unnecessary outbound links to other related articles in the hope that their readers will be interested and open the link.

The problem is, the strength of a website page in terms of backlinks is how many inbound links and how many outbound links.

The bigger the link that leads to the page, the stronger the authority. In the meanwhile, the page will become less valuable as the outbound link grows. If articles must have links, it is preferable to have two to three internal links. if you already have related articles and inline related plugins installed. Actually, there’s no need to link it, it’s not a problem. Simply said, there are situations when targeting anchor text for linked articles is really necessary, therefore do it. As long as it doesn’t exceed five manual links.

12. External Links in Navigation

The menu list in the restaurant always contains what food is available and what they offer to visitors.

This also applies to the navigation menu on our blog. Instead of making a good navigation menu, some bloggers actually create a menu that leads to their social media accounts on FB, Twitter, or Instagram.

As I said above, the navigation menu has the second strongest backlink after the home page of our site.

So you can imagine if some of these menus even lead out of our site?

The navigation menu should contain important pages on our site, such as a contact page, disclaimer, portfolio, FAQ, or featured category.

If we want to put a social media profile on our site, the best place is to put it in the sidebar.

13. No Contact Info

This one suffices to suggest to add a contact/about page, provide details about your social media accounts, and include your account number, email address, and phone number.

14. Low Number of Pages Found

Internal broken links? yes, this is a problem though not really really.

As a WordPress user, I am quite grateful because I am blessed with various ready-to-use and free plugins.

For example, I use the broken link checker plugin to check for broken links that appear on my blog.

Both external and internal broken links can be seen here. Unfortunately, sometimes the information from this plugin is not very valid.

But at least it makes it easier for WordPress users to monitor broken links.

For Blogspot users? you can use brokenlinkcheck.com or deadlinkchecker.com services too hehe, Broken links can occur due to client-side and server-side errors.

Client-side errors are marked with a code of 400’s ,  while The code 500s are used to identify server-side issues.

To see how many times our site has responded to 400 or 500, we can check it from Google Webmaster, precisely in the crawls error section.

For server-side errors, it usually occurs when the hosting is down for a while during maintenance or system upgrades, but if the code 500 often appears on the webmaster’s crawls error page.

My advice is to change hosting as soon as possible before it’s too late.
The 404 error code, which states that the page cannot be found, typically predominates over the 400 error (see also: the detrimental effect of 404 error for SEO).

Page not found could be due to

  1. Visitor error entering URL
  2. Change URL permalink
  3. Article deletion

Make sure first whether the page is indeed a visitor input error, we change the permalink URL or even delete the article.

If only the URL permalink changes, my advice for WordPress users, install the SEO Redirect plugin, there we can force visitors who enter the old URL to the new URL page.

Apart from that, the plugin is also useful for redirecting visitors to avoid 404 error pages by redirecting them to alternative pages.

15–16. TLD Correlated with Spam Domains & Domain Name Contains Numeral

Have you ever come across a website called most powerful seo.com, or a similar name?

Entering keywords in a domain name can be considered spam. Don’t build a website with keywords in the domain name. Additionally, it may be deemed spam to use a domain name that incorporates numerals.

  1. But before choosing a domain name consider
  2. Must be easy to remember
  3. Must be easy to relay to someone else
  4. Must be easy to spell
  5. Create a simple and short domain so one can easily  remember it .

17. Domain Name Length

Although domain names can have up to 63 characters, using subdomains like buyvitalis.freeshipping.onlinepharmacy.com can be regarded as keyword stuffing.

For now, the familiar length of the domain is between 5–13 characters. The shorter the domain name that is easy to remember will certainly provide benefits when sharing on limited social media such as Twitter, even though it’s not really important, you can replace it with a URL shortener.
